Steps in Making a Platter from a Piece of Wood*

  1. Find the right kind of wood.
  2. Cut the wood into appropriate lengths generally about 1/3 longer that the largest diameter (this allows for a certain amount of checking on the end grain).
  3. Cut appropriately sized blanks from the pieces lengthwise.
  4. If dry, begin shaping on the lathe.
  5. If wet, then either seal until it can be cut or cut to roughly the desired shape.
    1. If rough cut then seal and put aside or
    2. Use some drying technique such as alcohol or microwave.
  6. When completely dry (if not already so) then cut to final shape.
  7. Sand.
  8. Decorate.
  9. Try to sell it, then give it to someone.
